Burned Out Daughter
Back to Burned Out Daughter

I have not had a day off in a year caring for Dad. How does the first one actually get booked?

Burned Out Daughter / The break

A year with no day off is not a badge. It is a week, repeated 52 times, with no gold in it. The first day off is a booking, not a reward you have to earn.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

A year of this bar. The first day off does not wait for a better week. It is how a better week starts.

I have not had a day off in a year caring for Dad. That is not a humble brag and it is not a failure. It is a search term typed by a woman whose week has had no gold in it for 52 weeks running, and who is trying to find out whether a day off is something you are allowed to book or something you have to deserve. You are allowed to book it. This page is how.

He may be Dad in the search box and still be the parent in the house. The doors below do not care which word you use. They care whether someone else can be with him while you are not.

Does a year without a day off mean I have failed at taking care of myself?

No. The Family Caregiver Alliance reports that about 50 percent of caregivers get no outside help at all, and that most people, when asked if there is anything someone can do, reply that they are doing fine. A year with no day off is common in that half of the room. It is also how the National Institute on Aging's caregiver stress list arrives on schedule: exhaustion, overwhelm, trouble sleeping, skipping meals and showers, becoming easily angered.

AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving reported in July 2025 that 63 million Americans, nearly 1 in 4 adults, provided ongoing care in the past year. Plenty of them have not had a day off either. That does not make the year a badge. It makes the first booking overdue.

The NIA also says caregivers are less likely than others to get preventive health services and tend to have a higher risk of physical and mental health issues, sleep problems, and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure. A year without a day off is not only a calendar fact. It is a health fact about you, which is why your own doctor is on the list at the bottom of this page.

What counts as a day off when he cannot be left?

A day off means he is still looked after and you are not in the building, for a block with a start and an end. Four hours counts. Eight hours counts. A night counts. Sitting in the driveway with the monitor on does not count. Doing her errands while a neighbour sits with him is not your day off. The National Institute on Aging says respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers and may last anywhere from a few hours to several weeks at a time, at home, in a health care facility, or at an adult day care center. You do not have to disappear for a weekend before it counts. You do have to leave.

The first block is for sleep. Not the grocery run you have been postponing. Not the sibling call. Sleep, door shut, phone across the room. Once your body believes the house can run without you for four hours, the second block can be a real day: a morning that is yours, a dentist appointment, a shift. The first one is the proof.

How do I book the first one this week?

Write the block on the calendar first, in ink, before anyone has agreed to fill it. Tuesday 10 to 2, every Tuesday. Then fill it.

Public doors take applications and waiting. Aging Ahead, for St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin and Jefferson counties, may fund in-home respite or adult day as funding permits. Call (636) 207-0847. City address: (314) 612-5918. Anywhere in Missouri: 1-800-235-5503. If he served and is enrolled in VA health care, the VA's respite program pays for care for a short time when family caregivers need a break. If he is on hospice, Medicare covers most of the cost for up to five consecutive days of inpatient respite. Those doors are real. They are not this Tuesday unless someone already approved them.

This Tuesday is usually private hours. Missouri describes private-pay care at home as aide personal care, respite, or companion care with no physician order needed. The Family Caregiver Alliance's rule: if you need help right away, always go through an agency, as hiring privately takes time and energy to secure the right person. Call, ask for a standing Tuesday block, ask the rate on the phone. This site does not print rates.

He may not want a stranger in the house. Every family hears that, a year in. The Alliance's answer is to tell him that you need help, and that accepting hired care is something he can do to help you, not a sign you are going to abandon him. Be home for the first visit. Leave for the second. The hiring page walks that visit.

What about the year that already happened?

You do not get it back. You get next Tuesday. Do not spend the first day off reconstructing the year, writing a letter to the sibling, or catching up on the house. The year is why the National Institute on Aging tells you to tell your doctor that you are a caregiver. Make that appointment in the second block, not the first.

If a dementia diagnosis is part of the year, the Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 is a free line that has heard every version of a year with no day off. If the year has also been only you, the sibling split has its own page in the Alliance's sibling guide, and the family meeting should happen after you have slept, not instead of it.

What to do tonight

  • Write "Tuesday 10 to 2" (or your actual block) on the calendar in ink. The same block, every week.
  • Write which public doors apply, and one agency number for this week.
  • Tell one person the block exists. Someone who will ask you next Tuesday whether you left the house.
  • Decide now that the first block is sleep. Errands wait.

When to ask the care team or the doctor

Ask his care team whether a companion is enough for the block you picked, or whether anything in those hours needs a nurse. Medicare home health is skilled and part-time, and it is not a day off for you. Ask your own doctor for an appointment in the second block, and say out loud that you have not had a day off in a year. That sentence belongs in a chart, not only in a search box.
