The dog has been your parent's companion for years, and now it is also yours to worry about. You may not have noticed when the walks got shorter or the food ran low, because you were watching the bigger problems. This piece is for the moment you realize the animal is part of the list and nobody has written it down.
Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Notice the small changes
Look for walks that get shorter or stop, accidents indoors that did not happen before, water bowls that stay empty, litter that is not changed, a cat that hides when you come in, or a dog that does not come to the door. Notice whether your parent says the animal is slowing down or acting differently, and whether anyone has taken it to the vet since. Any of these is a reason to make a call, not a reason to feel guilty.
Count who is responsible
Write down who feeds the animal, who walks it, who pays for food and supplies, who books the vet, and who gets the call when something changes. If the answer to any of these is nobody, the animal is at risk of being forgotten, and that is the problem to solve first. If your parent still does some of the tasks, decide who checks them each week.
Compare the options
Ask a neighbor or a friend whether they would do a few visits a week. Look into a dog walker or pet sitter, and compare their availability, their insurance, and how they handle emergencies. Ask the vet's office what they need from you, and whether they can give you a written care sheet so anyone covering the animal knows what to do. If the animal cannot stay in the home, talk with your family about rehoming or a short boarding stay before the situation becomes urgent.
Book the vet visit
Schedule a visit so the animal is checked and the record is current. Ask the vet what the animal needs over the next few months and who will be responsible for each item. Then write the owner's name on the same list as the other weekly tasks. You do not have to solve everything today. You only have to stop the animal from being the thing nobody owns.
